A small passion that grew into a movement for knowledge in Cambodia

In a quiet home in 2016, a young Cambodian named Sok Lak began collecting books out of pure love for reading. What started as a small family library soon became a source of inspiration for an entire community. Within a few years, he had gathered more than 3,000 books in a family-run community library that welcomed students, neighbors, and curious readers.

That experience revealed something deeper: his passion for reading was not just personal—it was a missing link in Cambodia’s educational landscape.

🏫 Recognizing a National Need

As Sok Lak visited schools and community libraries across the provinces, he saw the same problem repeating. Many institutions wanted to promote reading but struggled to access quality, age-appropriate, and affordable books. Others lacked proper cataloging systems, library management tools, or even trained staff to organize their collections.

According to Ministry of Education data, fewer than 20 percent of public schools in Cambodia have functioning libraries, and most lack updated reading materials. At the same time, youth literacy and reading habits have declined due to limited exposure to engaging content. Sok Lak saw an opportunity to change that.

“What if there was an easier way to connect readers, schools, and libraries with the books they truly need?”

That single question became the seed of Scholar Book Center.

🌱 A Vision Born from Passion

In 2019, Sok Lak officially founded Scholar Book Center, starting with nothing but determination, a small team, and a vision to make reading accessible to everyone. He began by supplying books to libraries and organizations that lacked resources. Gradually, the initiative evolved into a full-scale social enterprise — helping institutions across Cambodia set up, organize, and modernize their libraries.

Through innovation and persistence, Scholar Book Center became more than a book distributor. It became a knowledge bridge, connecting communities to information and education resources, supporting teachers, and empowering young learners to explore beyond the classroom.

📖 Building a Culture of Reading

Today, Scholar Book Center manages a portfolio of over 4,000 book titles and provides access to more than 10,000 online titles through its digital platform, www.scholarkh.com

. The organization partners with over 100 school and community libraries nationwide and serves international clients in the U.S., Taiwan, and Germany.

Its social programs have directly reached more than 30,000 readers and distributed over 10,000 donated books to rural and under-resourced schools. Scholar Book’s outreach events, reading workshops, and “Library on Wheels” initiatives have inspired hundreds of children to fall in love with reading for the first time.

Beyond access to books, Scholar Book provides library consulting, acquisition planning, and digital catalog systems, helping institutions manage and sustain their own literacy spaces.

💬 Wisdom for the Next Generation

Sok Lak often shares one guiding principle with aspiring entrepreneurs:

“Spend time learning before you lead. Gain experience, build your skills, and grow your network. Knowledge and patience are the true foundations of success.”

His words reflect the essence of Scholar Book Center itself—a journey built on learning, resilience, and a deep love for knowledge.

🌍 Looking Ahead

Scholar Book Center continues to evolve as an education startup that blends tradition with technology. The company plans to expand its e-book offerings, create mobile apps for online learning, and collaborate with regional partners to promote literacy across Southeast Asia.

From one man’s family library to a national initiative empowering tens of thousands of readers, Scholar Book Center stands as living proof that a simple love for books can transform not only lives—but an entire culture.
